Occupy L.A. activists will "Occupy ICE" today to protest the persecution of immigrant families, reminding the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security that immigrant workers are part of the 99%.
About 2,000 workers, community members and activists - including those of Good Jobs L.A. - will meet at La Placita Olvera and march to the downtown L.A. federal building at 11:30am for a 12pm rally. Protesters are planning to set up camp in front of the building.
Activists claim that ICE agents have assumed 1% roles, "attacking workers like janitors who have sacrificed and struggled in efforts to turn poverty level jobs into good jobs," according to a Good Jobs L.A. release. Mike Garcia, President of SEIU United Service Workers West, California’s largest union of property service workers, said, "The 1% profits from fear. Fear of not being able to find a job. The fear of losing your house that you have worked hard for. And, the fear that immigrant workers feel that they may be separated from their children. But, we refuse to be afraid. We are going to fight back."
