L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy Crashes SUV into Starbucks, Kills One Man
An SUV crashed into a Ventura County Starbucks on Tuesday night, killing one man and injuring two other patrons.
KABC reports that the driver, Michael Cedarland of Pasadena, lost control of his vehicle and veered about 300 feet from the road and smashed into the building around 7pm. The victim, Sergio Mendez, 30, was pinned between the vehicle and the front door frame, according to L.A. Now.
The vehicle hit the Fillmore Starbucks with such force that officials had to red-tag the building, which means no one can enter the premises.
Mendez, a former Marine, and two others were transported to Ventura County Medical Center. Mendez suffered serious internal injuries and died during surgery. The other two victims were treated and released.
Cedarland, who did not appear to be intoxicated, has not been charged and was taken to a hospital. He was uninjured in the crash. KABC reports that Cedarland is an L.A. County sheriff's deputy. He was off-duty at the time of the crash.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Capt. Bruce Macedo of the Sheriff's Department told L.A. Now that Cedarland may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
