Chart Topping From Beyond The Grave: Amy Winehouse's New Album Is #1

Following its release last Monday, Amy Winehouse's posthumous 12-track album Lioness: Hidden Treasures has scored the number one spot on Britain's album chart in just one week. Over 194,000 copies of the album have been sold, giving Winehouse, who died in July, the biggest weekly sales tally of her career, according to AFP.

The Telegraph reports that producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson selected the 12 songs after listening to "thousands of hours of vocals" by Winehouse. Many of the songs are from Frank and Back To Black recording sessions.

A portion of the album's proceeds will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which was founded after the songstress' death to help fund charities that support young people. Today's video lunch shares proud father Mitch Winehouse discussing the "beautiful" album's rapid achievement.

I'm sure there are some less sinister reasons for putting out this record but it reminds me of the Smiths song "Paint a Vulgar Picture"...

    At the record company meeting
On their hands - a dead star
And oh, the plans they weave
    And oh, the sickening greed
    ...
    Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
    Re-evaluate the songs
    Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track and a tacky badge...
