1 Protester Arrested Today As Occupy L.A. Marches From Pershing Square to County Jail [UPDATED]
Occupy Los Angeles, whose encampment on City Hall lawn was raided on Tuesday night, marched from Pershing Square down Broadway and through downtown to the jail at the Twin Towers Correctional facility.
One protester was arrested as the group marched down the sidewalk and streets of downtown. The group was met with private security guards and police in riot gear. The Occupy Los Angeles website identified the protester arrested as Anthony Lascano. CBS Los Angeles confirmed on Twitter that there was an arrest and that LAPD was sending in additional units to the protest.
Occupy L.A. protestor Ruth Fowler said that Lascano was arrested during a scuffle around 1:30pm when LAPD officers were trying to move protesters from the street back onto the sidewalk. She wrote that a police officer "grabbed, beat and arrested Anthony Lascano, an Occupier who was just released from jail yesterday with no charges." Fowler also claims that police beat five other protesters.
Someone with the handle danicolaj has been streaming the march from his phone for the last few hours. Just before 4pm, protesters were in front of the jail demanding that Lascano be released. They shouted, "Free Anthony!"
UPDATE 12/4: Someone with the username migue1r caught part of the incident that led to the arrest on YouTube. It's not clear from the video what started it but in the video several LAPD officers and private security guards swarm the area starting at about the :51 minute mark. An LAPD officer can be seen pushing a photographer away at the 1:02 mark:
The Los Angeles Times has a shot of an unidentified protester on the ground, but when the paper tried to check in with an LAPD media rep for a 10pm post last night, the police department wasn't offering any details or confirming the arrestee's name.
