Failed negotiations for the lease for the AMC Avco Center 4 in Westwood mean the movie theatre is going to shut down on Sunday. AMC was unable to come to agreeable lease renewal terms with the landlord, Avco Corp., reports the LA Times' Company Town blog.

According to property manager Hope Hunter, however, movies aren't moving out of the property: "A really high-end movie theater will be taking its place. We're going to provide Westwood with a really great movie theater and a reason to come back."

The Avco Center 4 is the second movie theatre in Westwood to go dark lately; the Majestic Crest will be closing soon for "unspecified renovations."

Elsewhere around town, the Laemmle Sunset 5 is also closing in December, but will be refurbished and re-opened by new operator, Sundance.

AMC has operated the Avco since 2002.

With one notable exception (The Beverly Center), I hate for movie theatres to close.
However, I NEVER liked the Avco even before General Cinema destroyed it with a miserable multiplexing plan.

With one exception, I never like to see movie theatres close. (That exception being T.B.C.)
However, I NEVER liked the Avco and hated the way General Cinema divided it up way back when.

It was a fine theater when I moved to town in 1999. Last time I went however, I spent the first 10 mins trying find someone to tell them to turn off the lights because the movie had started. The seats are horrendous and there were so many crickets in the theater it was sometimes difficult to hear the quiet dialogue. It's a dump in need of renewal.

Not a single tear will be shed.

Ooo.  Good one.  Short answer is, beats me.
And why are all the actor's faces blurred out in the picture?
    That's just..... weird.

The photo is taken from Google Maps, which uses an automated algorithm to blur out anything recognized as a face to avoid silly lawsuits it has encountered in the past.

The Avco AMC sucks- the free parking is worthless if you can't find it, the bathrooms are frightening, and the seats are akin to sitting on piles of rocks. The Criterion and Broadway AMCs at Santa Monica Promenade should follow suit to a quick death. It would be a different  story if they showed $2 second-run movies rather than expect premium prices for sub-par picture and environment.
