NOFX to Rock Occupy LA Before Eviction Block Party
Occupy L.A. has been ordered by the City of Los Angeles to decamp by 12:01am on Monday. To support the occupation during the eviction, the "$%#& It! I'll Do It Myself" Affinity group is hosting an "Occupy L.A. Eviction Block Party."
The group "invites you to come and celebrate our first amendment rights to gather and redress our grievances against our city government" in their Facebook event, urging Angelenos to join them in the streets surrounding City Hall to stand in solidarity with occupiers.
"We need to flood the streets surrounding Solidarity park to show our solidarity with not just Occupy LA and Occupy Wall Street but with the entire Global Occupy Movement," the group posted on the Facebook event.
Block party participants are asked to bring video cameras, still cameras, video phones, flags, signs, banners and musical instruments.
People have expressed concern about the risk of arrest during the block party, but the group assures participants that their wrists will be free of handcuffs as long as they do not choose to get arrested.
The LAPD is not going to arrest anyone who does not chose to get arrested. Anyone who follows any order given by the LAPD will not get arrested. There is no law that states that it is illegal to walk on a public sidewalk at any time of day or night. It is legal to walk in a circle on the sidewalk so long as you keep moving if ordered to do so.
The block party is slated for 11:30pm Sunday through 5am Monday. Occupy L.A. supporters are encouraged to arrive early to see NOFX perform at 3pm, plus the LAPD will most likely block off the streets.
The eviction comes after two months of City Hall lawn occupation. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa cited increasing concerns over public health, public safety, and the well-being of the protesters themselves as the main reasons for the impending eviction. Authorities are aiming to maintain a peaceful eviction, though they expect arrests will be made.
