Pencil This In: Thanksgiving Double Feature & Fighting Music
It's Thanksgiving Eve, and we bet you could use a little laugh. Lucky for you, that's what L.A.'s got going on tonight. The Laugh Factory and Upright Citizens Brigade are finding the fun in Thanksgiving family gatherings, and Aero Theatre is showcasing two of the funniest Thanksgiving-centric films. If you're really dreading the holiday, don't fret. We found some movies and music that will make you forget all about tomorrow.
THANKSGIVING COMEDY - UPRIGHT CITIZENS BRIGADE
Fearing Thanksgiving dinner with the fam? Let the Upright Citizens Brigade slice into the fun of "a truly messed up family," says the website, in their "Thanksgiving Feast Show." Unfortunately, the show is sold out, but there is a stand-by line. 8:30pm. $5. Following the feast is "Shitty Holidays," an improv show that culls from interviews with audience members about their worst holidays. 9:30pm. $5. This show is also sold out with a stand-by line.
THANKSGIVING COMEDY - LAUGH FACTORY
The laughs continue tonight at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood. "Turkeys Last Night Out" features the comedy of Jay Davis, Ben Morrison, Cort McCown, Neal Brennan and John Henson. 8pm. Doors open at 7:30pm. Pre-Sale General Admission $15; Door General Admission $20. Pre-Sale VIP $25; Door VIP $30. This show is NOT sold out, and tickets can be purchased online.
THANKSGIVING FILM*
Santa Monica's Aero Theatre is screening a Thanksgiving double feature tonight. "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," a 1987 comedy directed by John Hughes starring John Candy and Steve Martin, plays first, followed by Woody Allen's rom com "Hannah and Her Sisters." 7:30pm. General Admission $11.00, Cinematheque Members $7.00, Seniors 65+ and Students with valid ID $9.00. Tickets can be purchased online.
MUSIC
What's Next? Ensemble presents Fighting Music tonight at Royal/T in Culver City. Some of L.A.'s most talented musicians will perform five pieces, taking the audience "on a sonic journey from the depths of Louis Andriessen's brutalist and timely "Workers Union" to the soaring heights of Donald Crockett's "To Airy Thinness Beat," covering the diverse musical paths of Sean Friar, Wojteck Blecharz, and Franco Donatoni along the way," per a release. 8pm. $5.
FILM
UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Million Dollar Theater present a "Writers in Los Angeles Double Feature" tonight with Joel Coen's 1991 "Barton Fink" and Barbet Schroeder's 1987 "Barfly," starring Mickey Rourke. 7:30pm. $10 general admission; $9 students and seniors. The UCLA student free ticket policy does not apply, and tickets are available only at the theater box office, which opens one hour before the program start time on the day of the show.
