'Spicy' Sailors Busted for Using Synthetic Marijuana
San Diego-based sailors are in hot water after being busted for using, possessing and/or distributing the designer drug dubbed "spice." Six investigations of the crew aboard the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan over the past month have identified 28 sailors as the culprits.
The Navy is processing administrative separation for all accused sailors, citing their zero-tolerance illegal drug policy as reason for discharge. Lt. Beth Teach, a 3rd Fleet spokeswoman, said that the sailors were caught "by various events during the past month," reports Navy Times.
L.A. Now describes spice as a so-called fake marijuana made with synthetic cannabinoid compounds. The DEA has declared some of said compounds illegal due to ridiculously high potency levels.
The Ronald Reagan incident follows a string of other similar sailor busts within the fleet. Navy Times lists the previous incidents as follows:
*In October, 49 sailors assigned to the carrier Carl Vinson were getting discharged under the Navy’s zero-tolerance policy for illicit drugs. The case is the largest single spice bust involving members of one crew.*A September investigation into spice and cocaine use by three sailors with attack submarine San Francisco led to seven others who were using spice.
*Three sailors assigned to dry floating dock Arco were busted for spice.
*In February, 16 sailors aboard amphibious assault ship Bataan were kicked out for using spice.
