The ringing will soon begin, and no, we're not talking about sleigh bells (yet). The jingle-jangle we're referring to belongs to a small red bell, a bell that signals shoppers to donate some of their gift-giving funds to charity. The Salvation Army has ramped up its fundraising efforts this year, adding a special new device to their iconic Red Kettles.

For every cash and change slot will exist a Square credit card reader. These point-of-purchase gadgets snap onto smartphones to create a safe way to make and receive credit card payments. Over 8,000 readers have been shipped throughout the U.S.

Sprint embraced the holiday spirit and provided phones to Salvation Army bell ringers. The program will run in select cities, including San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Dallas. Hey, what about L.A.?!

This holiday season, the excuse, "I don't have any cash," will be deemed irrelevant. For those of you who don't believe in cash, we know you believe in plastic.

Great, just another way our credit cards can be stolen

I feel like such a cynic, but that was my first thought, too.

To be clear, not necessarily the SA worker, but the device itself. It's just an extra device the SA person will have that can get lost or stolen.
