Braving Black Friday This Year? So Are 152 Million Shoppers

If you need that little extra restraint to stay indoors this Black Friday - the biggest clusterfuck shopping day of the year - a recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF) has it.

Approximately 152 million shoppers will descend upon retailers on November 25. The figure is up 10.1% from last year's 138 million. Polled between November 1 and November 8, the survey targeted 8,502 people.

In anticipation of the consumer chaos, major retailers, including Target, Macy's and Kohl's, will open their doors at midnight on Thanksgiving.

The NRF predicts that from November-December, retail sales will rise 2.8% to $465.6 billion.

CBS' MoneyWatch just released "Black Friday shopping: 5 reasons to stay home."

1. Door-busters are mainly second-tier products
2. You can find some of the same deals online
3. You're more likely to overspend
4. Layaway may not be available
5. Return policies may be stricter

Fox Business recommends, should you brave the mayhem, to add the following items to your list: tablets, DVDs, video games and kitchen gear. Shoppers are advised to steer clear of television, laptop, luxury item and toy purchases.

Speaking for ourselves, sometimes it pays to stay home.
