Pedal to Santa Monica's Brand New Bicycle Center This Friday
Are you ready for the largest bicycle facility of its kind in the U.S. of A., L.A.? This Friday, November 18, the Santa Monica Bike Center will open its doors and beckon bicyclists to pedal in for a hug.
Hugs aren't actually a promised perk of the grand opening, but bicycle enthusiasts will feel the warm embraces of the City of Santa Monica and the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The $2 million full-service facility incorporates two combined spaces totaling 5,300 square-feet, features nearly 360 secure bicycle parking spaces, offers bicycle rentals and dedicates areas for self-service repairs.
Bicycle commuters, listen up. The center also features showers, lockers, vending and restrooms. Funded by Metro, the project aims to "increase bike/transit connections for work and play to and from Santa Monica," per a release.
Local cyclists will meet at the Santa Monica City Hall lawn on Friday morning for a short ride to the shiny new facility starting at 9:15am. Ribbon and cake will be cut during the 10am ceremony. Open house commences at 11am and wraps at 5pm.
