College Football Schedule Week 11: What To Say?
It is hard to imagine talking about college football after all of the gruesome revelations that have come out of State College, PA. It’s sick enough when a child fucker was running loose for decades victimizing underprivileged boys in the guise of his charity he established. But when a major university, a venerable football head coach and an entire police department in small town America covered up for this child fucker all in the name of the university, it is outright disgusting.
A lot of us have read the disgusting grand jury presentment of all of the 40 charges filed against Jerry Sandusky so far. We’ve seen a megalomaniacal and out-of-touch head coach Joe Paterno trying to dictate the terms of his departure only to have been shown the door nonetheless. We’ve seen some students blindly showing their loyalty to this enabler and riot on the main street of their small town.
All week, I’ve tried to write about this. Unfortunately my emotions got in the way and it degenerated into paragraphs of swearing and nonsensical ranting. But there are things I can’t reconcile.
1. I wonder how the victims, the ones that have come forward and the ones who are still too frightened to report what happened, I wonder how they’re holding up. I hope they’re getting all the help that they need to try and live productive lives.
2. I wonder how anyone with any ounce of morality in his or her being can allow any of this to transpire. Whether it’s the graduate assistant, head coach, athletic director, police chief, district attorney, local coot. How can any of them allow an environment where child fucking was occurring to continue?
3. I wonder if the fact that I write about sports, athletes and teams contributes to the false deification of these people. I try to write about what I see, and that’s it. I try not to be a fan of any team, player or company.
But as difficult as all of this has been, nothing can be more difficult than what those boys had to endure. That is the tragedy of all of this.
