If a proposed tuition increase is approved by the California State University Board of Trustees, it would mean a sixth straight year of fees going up. The current increase is a proposed 9 percent, or $498 annually for full-time undergrads at the CSU's 23 campuses.

Annual tuition would be upped to just under $6,000 per year.

The tuition hike, however, could be avoided if the state gives the university system the $138 million the CSU is asking for from the Legislature.

The CSU budget, as well as the University of California budget, lost $650 million each in state funding under Governor Jerry Brown's state budget plan. That loss resulted in a whopping 23 percent tuition increase this school year. The average yearly increase has become 16 percent.

This week, CSU faculty were out protesting the university withholding their pay raises as well as fee hikes and funding cuts on all the campuses. Two campuses, CSU East Bay and CSU Dominguez Hills, will find faculty striking on November 17.

The CSU Board of Trustees will vote Wednesday on the fee hike.
