ATTENTION AMERICAN AIRLINES PASSENGERS: New TSA Program Could Move You Swiftly Through LAX Security

Flying American Airlines in 2012? If you agree to participate in the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck program, you could glide through the security portion of your travels.

The limited program has already been implemented at four other U.S. locations and will be introduced to LAX come early 2012. The process is voluntary; volunteers are questioned and screened by federal officials prior to flying domestic. Successful participants may then be referred to a shiny, empty lane for expedited screening at the terminal.

John S. Pistole, the head of the TSA, said, "Because we know more about these passengers, TSA PreCheck travelers are able to divest themselves of fewer items, which may include leaving on their shoes, jackets and light outerwear as well as other modifications to the standard screening process," reports L.A. Now.

In a press release dated October 4, 2011, TSA stated that by learning more about travelers and incorporating that information with other security methods, "we can focus more resources on higher-risk and unknown passengers."

Initially, the program will be exclusive to American Airlines passengers but should expand in the future.

In addition to LAX, the TSA PreCheck program will be introduced at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas in December and Minneapolis-St. Paul in early 2012. Pilot program locations include Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Dallas/Fort Worth International and Miami International.
