Pencil This In: 'To Live & Die in LA,' The Encyclopedia Show + Free Wine
Since most of our apartments are colder than the outdoor temp, why not leave your abodes and check out tonight's local events? The Hammer Museum features a free art lecture by a New York-based painter, and gLAnce Wine Bar is serving up free eats and wine tastings. It's another great night for film, as the AFI Film Fest is going strong in Hollywood, and the Million Dollar Theater is showcasing another double feature. Plus, The Encyclopedia Show is back for a night of live verbal encyclopedia entries all about the moon. Have at 'em, and please report back.
ART LECTURE
New York-based painter Sue Williams will lecture at the Hammer Museum tonight. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at a number of esteemed and international art spaces, including the Carpenter Center, Harvard University, Cambridge; IVAM, Valencia, Spain; Secession, Vienna, Austria; and Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva. 7pm. Free.
ENCYCLOPEDIA SHOW*
The Encyclopedia Show, which made its L.A. debut in October, is back tonight with its variety show extravaganza. Tonight's installment at King King presents The Moon (Series 1, Volume 2). Doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm. Advance ticket sales have ended, but tickets are just $10 at the door. The show is 21+. Check out the lineup and topics here.
EXPERIMENTAL FILM
Hollywood's Mann Chinese & Egyptian Theatres are hosting the AFI Film Festival this week, and tonight's showing at the Mann Chinese Theatre is an experimental work directed by Bill Morrison. "Spark of Being" retells the tale of Frankenstein using found footage meticulously step printed and repurposed. 10:30pm. Free. Reserve your spot and learn more about the film online.
FRIEDKIN FILM
UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Million Dollar Theater present a Friedkin double feature of the director's 1985 film "To Live and Die in LA," starring William Dafoe, and his 1971 feature "The French Connection," starring Gene Hackman. 7:30pm. $10 general admission; $9 students and seniors. The UCLA student free ticket policy does not apply, and tickets are available only at the theater box office, which opens one hour before the program start time on the day of the show.
WINE TASTING
Although California Wine Month has wrapped, gLAnce Wine Bar at JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live will continue its Meet the Winemaker series every Wednesday through December 7. Guests will sip complimentary wine tastings plus enjoy a sampling of small seasonal bites prepped by the hotel's chef. Tonight's featured winery is Alexander Valley Vineyards from Sonoma Valley, California. 5:30pm-7pm. Free.
