Hawaiian Surfer Shreds 90-Foot Wave in Portugal, Breaks World Record
Portugal's waves put L.A.'s surf scene, even Orange County's surf scene, to heavy, heavy shame. Garrett McNamara, a big-wave surfing icon from Hawaii, successfully shredded possibly the biggest wave ever surfed on Tuesday. The wave measured about 90 feet. Hang however many you want, McNamara. You're a champion.
GrindTV reports that members of McNamara's group implied that the beast "was the largest wave ever successfully negotiated during a tow-surfing session." He caught the rogue wave off the coast of Nazare, a small Portuguese fishing town. McNamara's ride destroyed the current Guinness World Record, which lists Mike Parsons' 77-foot ride as the current best.
Today's video lunch shows footage of McNamara's inspiring ride. Prepare for your jaw to drop and your heart to either stop or speed up. It's a spectacular sight.
McNamara's momentous shred will be entered in the Billabong XXL Global Big-Wave Awards.
