Metro to Launch "Major Expansion" of Night Service on Rail Lines

One of Angelenos' biggest grumbles about taking public transit at night is that service is limited, both in frequency and how late the service runs. Now Metro says they are about to launch what they're calling a "major expansion" of night service on their rail lines. So what kinds of big changes can we expect?

Well, for starters, they're calling it: "More Trains More Often." They should add: "But Not Any Later." Sigh.

Okay, it's still a big win, though. The plan, says Blogdowtown, is for Metro to "run trains on the Red, Purple and Blue lines every 10 minutes until midnight." That's a huge boon to anyone who has ever had to sit and wait for 20 or more minutes to pick up a subway late at night, after a dinner out, a few drinks at a station-handy bar, or at one of the many sporting and entertainment venues near rail stops.

Speaking of those venues, several are expected to announce they "will be offering Metro riders discounts as a fu[r]ther incentive for taking public transit on top of the savings they will enjoy by not driving and having to pay for gas and parking fees," according to Metro in a media release about the pending launch.

Metro has scheduled a press conference to be attended by Los Angeles Mayor and Metro Board Chair Antonio Villaraigosa and others for Monday, November 7 at the Music Center. We hear it will be about week after that when the expanded service kicks in.

I'm just going to echo the above comments. Yes, this actually is quite a good win. But c'mon metro, really? can you seriously not run a couple more trains until the bars close? wanna stop people from drinking and driving? give them a reasonable option to get home!

    +10.

    Also, ♥♥♥.

Even a single hourly train per line through the wee hours would be enough to make the difference. If you knew you could *depend* on the train to get you close to home regardless of when you decided to make your way there, many many more people would plan to use them.

    Oh HELL yes.
I mean, I'm down past Westlake and MacArthur Park; if I'm out somewhere like Hollywood or even, like, Wurstkuche or somewhere east, I HATE having to keep track of time so I don't miss the last train.  I've walked home from Hollywood a few times.... not that I wanted to, but I didn't have much choice.  It sobered me up, but man did my legs give me hell the next day.
    ;_;

  • How come you didn't take the bus?

  • PicoPhreako69

Honestly, I didn't even think about it.
Plus the bus was also down for the night as well by that time.  If I'd HAD enough cash, I would've taken a cab, but,....

  • It should run until 3AM.  For those too drunk to make the last 3AM train, they will have to wait until 4:30AM when service starts again.

I wish they would implement 24h service

  • still no 2am service for people who go out on the weekends. :/

  • wackyxaky

The conspiracy theorist in me says it's all the taxi cab companies that keep the drunkies from access to public transit :P

2am service, yeah right. Next they'll build a subway to Santa Monica
