'Hungry & Desperate' Coyote Chases Jogger & Dogs in Newport Beach

A Newport Beach jogger did not enjoy a chase during his morning run on Tuesday near the Back Bay. Who or what was chasing him? A coyote.

Lucky for Brian Clarkson, the 37-year-old jogger, a man on a horse spotted a coyote running towards Clarkson and his two Yorkie mixes. The equestrian hero yelled at the coyote, who according to Clarkson, "seemed hungry and desperate," reports Daily Pilot.

The coyote was only momentarily deterred by the rider's vocal attempts and continued to chase Clarkson, staying near bushes across the street. The rider escorted Clarkson and his pups along the trail near University Drive and Irvine Avenue until the incident could be reported to park rangers.

Obviously shaken, Clarkson said, "I've never been chased by a coyote looking for a kill before."

Senior Animal Control Officer Valerie Schomburg of the Newport Beach Police says that fall typically sees an increase in coyotes due to the birth of pups in the spring. The city does not trap coyotes, but if one behaves erratically multiple times, the state Department of Fish and Game becomes involved. No known attacks have occurred in Newport Beach. Schomburg added that usually coyotes are startled and "are going to flee rather than fight you."

Schomburg recommended to keep pets on leashes and leave their treats at home.
