When news of veteran radio personality Jim Ladd losing his gig at KLOS broke, foremost from Ladd himself was that he didn't get to say goodbye. "My disappointment is I didn't have a farewell show," he told the OC Register.

Ladd, among over a dozen people terminated at KLOS/95.5 FM and KABC/790 AM on October 25, was known as the "the last free-form rock DJ in America," and had been at L.A.'s venerable hard rock station for 14 years, after having worked there twice previously, as well. Ladd was one of the only commercial radio DJs who selected his own playlist, and often took requests from his loyal listeners.

Denied a "farewell" broadcast, there is some upbeat news for Ladd fans today: He will grace the airwaves Saturday from 4-7 p.m. on KFI, having been offered by the station manager to do the "goodbye" show he was not able to do at KLOS.

Trivia: Ladd was the inspiration for the 2002 album and title track The Last DJ by Tom Petty.

  • I remember Jim Ladd from the days when he was at The Mighty Met,KMET. now THAT was a rock station not the b.s KLOS. KLOS is just a recycled KRTH, and I don't listen to the same thing over and over again. I think Jim would be perfect for satellite radio. His ''free form" style fits right in with whats happening over there and I would welcome this happening. He is the greatest dj and a total professional. I will be listening on Sat. night on KFI to Jim once again.KLOS has no class in treating a legend in this way and I hope they're on there way out. I never listen to KLOS anymore..." G'night everybody" WHOO-YA!!!

  • Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

  • What's your beef with him - did he steal your girlfriend? I have listened to this guy's show off and on since the late 70s. He changed rock and roll radio, and the airwaves are diminished by his dismissal. He was the last bastion of curated commercial radio that wasn't generated off some Top 40 playlist. It was an experience, not just a commercial product. Perfect for late night drives. I left conventional music radio stations behind years ago and haven't looked back since. All the interesting stuff is going to internet radio, satellite radio, or the rare public station that is still thriving. Jim's dismissal is just more confirmation of radio's relentless march towards homogenized pop tripe.

I wish Jim the best in whatever new ventures he pursues.

Yeah, we're all going to miss "Jim Ladd Presents Another Hour of Folk Rock".

  • Pink Floyd is folk rock?

I'm making jokes. I'm not going for total factual accuracy.
