Family Reunited With Grandma's Ashes Stolen a Week Ago at the Mall
It's rare that items swiped from your parked car ever get returned, but for one lucky family, they are getting their most valued item back. The ashes of their grandmother were stolen October 24 by thieves who broke into their vehicle at the Westfield Promenade Mall and made off with their luggage, packed to escort grandma's remains back east.
On Sunday, a duffel bag containing the ashes and other items stolen was found in the mall parking lot, says the Los Angeles Police Department.
The bag was discovered early Sunday morning by security guards at the mall, explain the LAPD, though it is not clear if the bag was newly-left at Owensmounth Avenue and Erwin Street, or had been there all along. The guards opened the bag and soon realized it likely belonged to the family whose GMC Yukon was burglarized almost a week before.
The ashes have been returned to the family. The LAPD say their investigation is ongoing.
