Occupy L.A.: City Councilman Says "It's time to move on"

Protesters taking part in Occupy L.A. at City Hall have enjoyed a largely positive response from elected officials and city staff, but now one City Councilman says enough is enough. Bill Rosendahl says he agrees with their cause, but outside City Hall is no longer the place for them to hang out.

"They've made their statement. I agree with their statement, but it's time to move on," said Rosendahl," according to ABC7.

The relatively calm gathering in Downtown Los Angeles set up camp on October 1, and has said they plan to stay until December. Soon after their "occupation" began, City Council passed a special resolution in support of their protest.

That support, however, may be waning, as "city officials said they would like to meet with protesters to talk about a time table for them to peacefully leave the lawn."

  • Protest is good.  I did it in an orderly manner, years ago, and we pulled a police permit for it.
Instead of the Mayor handing out 'pancho' rain coats, to buy your votes, he should have cited the first campers, at the first evening they began to set up tents.  It's against the law of our City's municipal codes.    City council need not create additional laws.  We have enough laws in our LA municipal codes to handle any situation.  In fact, too many laws.  All we needed was a strong leader who would not be selective as to which laws to enforce.

May I encourage OWS protesters to pack council chambers, at every session and listen to the millions of your tax dollars being given away to corporate welfare millionaires and billionaires.  Then you'll understand, like I did, that this mayor and city council's voting history, has made this town, number-one in record-high unemployment.

    Respectfully, I'm David Barron

ABC news and the majority of news outlets (mainstream and in the US, largely) are doing their best to create rumors and discredit the movement so it does not grow.  I posted this on HuffPo in response to their article:
OccupyLA is in direct contact and communication with City Officials. Occupiers attended a city council meeting this morning and Mr. Rosendahl claims he was misquoted and / or taken out of context. The video I saw did not include the quote "they've made their statement. I agree with their statement, but it is time to move on." Furthermore, when OccupyLA spoke to their LAPD contact, Sargent Baker, the LAPD was as surprised as we were to hear Rosendahl say what he said. Baker said the Chief’s position is that, “if the council decides there must be some change in OLA, we will all sit down with the organizers of OLA and the Lawyers Guild, etc., and have discussions about what the council wants and what the OLAers want. Jim, please tell them we have no plans to attack the occupation and will not do that. We are determined that whatever happens down the road we are not going to do what NYC and Atlanta and Oakland have done.”

Yeah! Get the heck out. Sitting around like bums is not gonna change anything. This pseudo-movement has obviously been co-opted and the only thing that it's gonna come out of it is something akin to the tea party. Look to the big names supporting it, look who's funding it, go beyond the facade, and see the many conflicts of interest.

The powers that be are on both sides, so they win either way. Are people that naive to think that movements cannot be infiltrated?

  • To me this seems the natural out growth of what the Tea partiers are all about. First they make a big ruckus about supporting the status quo don't tax the "job creators", worship the wealthy, (like they expected some to rub off on them), hands off mine.

Then along come the people who actually realize how badly they're getting screwed, and they're going to shout a bit louder.

  • J:
So don't have it? Have no movements? Have no attempt to do anything because some people will want to have an effect over it. Details please, WHO is currently FUNDING it, the WHOLE thing? Since it is all over the nation and in other NATIONS... Who is this ONE group infiltrating it and steering it? I am actually interested to know.

The 60's had a lot of people sitting around like BUMS... it had an impact... If all it does is inspire others, possibly motivate some new leaders... than that to me is worth continuing. Gandhi had a whole lot of people sitting around doing nothing and that had a profound impact on the course of history.Just historically speaking.

Rosendahl doesn’t get it. This isnt about being there until someone from city hall says “I get it” Its about being there until action is taken. Rosendahl, we’ve already learned the value of a politician’s words, now we will see what you are like in action.

I wish Rosendahl was as concerned with having the RV Dwellers in Venice "move on" as he is about this. But, in fairness, the Occupy LA protesters probably disrupt his life way more than crime in his district ever would.

  • The Occupations will transform BUT 30days is NOT a movement... The fact that it is getting annoying is GOOD! It shouldn't be passive. It is not just a statement, it is a permanent swatch of society, like the Tea Party claims to be. It shouldn't disband, it may move location but it needs to be an eyesore, it needs to be in the way, it needs to get attention. It is not a beggar who you give change too, feel good and walk away. This is a segment of society that has decided the current US vs. THEM promoted by current politics does not work. This is an Independent Party that is neither right nor left but ALL! As Washington, the father of our Country warned about a party system http://www.ushistory.org/gov/5... we see how it becomes an US vs. THEM mentality. Each law is not considered on it's own merit but how it can help or hurt the party politically. This does not serve the people in any way? When a President will only meet with his party, when members of a party are thrown out for not voting in lock step with their parties declared agenda/strategy, when people suffer for political and monetary gains, we do not have a working government. I look at this as a growing Government OF the PEOPLE... growing to the point that Left and Right meld into a group that democratically make choices not by their groups philosophy but issue by issue, looking at  current issues that are being faced by the society as a whole. This is an inclusive movement of people who LOVE America and want their piece of it while understanding not at the expense of others BECAUSE we are the OTHERS.

They understand "You can't have your cake and eat mine too!"

So... We Occupy's should not leave anywhere... Once it gets stabilized into a true movement, it will have permanent occupying spaces all over the country (and apparently the world) a true world party, a gathering to share, dance, sing and be heard, a party that everyone is invited to, and being a human being is the cover to get it.

It is the evolution of world politics... A World Democracy...

Washington would be camping out with them and be very happy with the True American Passion that fuels it!

    P.S.
    Another reason NOT to disperse...

  • It's all fun until the cops show up with their clubs.

They should stay there until the government makes some tangible changes.  Isn't that the point?
