Local Artist Draws Badass Cast of 'Breaking Bad'

Trio of David Craig's "Breaking Bad" drawings

L.A.-based artist David Craig, also known as Meathead, is a loyal "Breaking Bad" fan. Inspired by the AMC series' fourth (and latest) season, Craig illustrated eight of the show's most prominent characters in both black-and-white and color versions, perfectly capturing each individual's badassness.

When we asked Craig about his affinity for "Breaking Bad," he boldly said, "I genuinely believe it's the best show on TV right now, and one of the best in recent memory." The idea to create an illustration series around the show popped into the artist's head when there were still a couple episodes of the fourth season remaining. From inception to completion, the series took about one month to tackle.

If you're curious about Craig's creation process, as we were, here's a little insight into how he produced the "Breaking Bad" series.

Usually what I end up doing is I start with a photo (or sometimes more than one) for reference, but I try to refer to it as little as possible. Once the basic groundwork is there, then I'll go off and do my own thing with it. Sometimes the end result is a relatively literal interpretation of the subject, other times it's more abstract. Just depends where my head is at at the time, I guess.

Step inside Meathead's Web Hole and ogle the illustrated likenesses of Gus, Mike, Saul, Hank, Skyler, Tio Salamanca, Jesse and, of course, Walter. You can see his collection here.

Before you start asking about Walter, Jr., Marie and Ted, Craig had to draw the line somewhere and "tried to limit it to the most important characters of this past season in particular." He may do another series for the fifth and sadly final season.

We asked Craig a few more questions about the show, and if you're a "Breaking Bad" fan, you'll definitely appreciate his answers.

Who's your favorite "Breaking Bad" character?
Have to say Gus. As I said, all the actors on the show are great, but Gus' character is just so genius.

Who would win in a staring contest: Hank, Gus, Walter or Jesse?
Hank. I think staring contests are part of the DEA's training regimen.

Is there anything you'd like readers to know about the series?
If anyone feels so inclined, they can purchase a print of any of the drawings via my website. Each print is signed by hand, which is something most artists who shill "Breaking Bad" prints don't offer.

Aside from his television tribute work, Craig continues to pen portraits of celebrities for his Year Book project. The project keeps Craig creative and busy on a daily basis, as he aims to draw a different celebrity for every day of 2011.
