Fogged Glass Drawings Dance to Life in New Music Video

Director Hoku Uchiyama, who trained at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, joined creative forces with songwriting and performing duo Evelyn Evelyn to mastermind an entertaining and imaginative music video for the duo's song "Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn."

Finger drawings on fogged glass come to life in the video via a blend of hand-drawn animation and live action. Following the characters as they dance from window pane to window pane, viewers are guided through the song's story. Dubbed fog-glass animation, the process proved difficult. The camera failed to capture the condensation, so the "crew improvised improvised a solution with water and dulling spray,” said Uchiyama, according to DesignTAXI, who posted the video and details on its production hurdles today. "In post-production, through trial and error, we zeroed in on what makes foggy windows look like foggy windows and thus we nailed what we needed to reproduce it digitally," Uchiyama explained.

The complicated process also involved editing the water on the glass to bend and warp the background objects. Masking was required to make the hands more in focus, plus finger oils and moving water were added.

Today's video lunch definitely requires a view and round of applause to artists like Uchiyama and Evelyn Evelyn who continue to raise the creative bar. And we don't even know the half of what it takes to do so.
