How Much Could Re-Greenifying City Hall Lawn Cost? $400K.

Occupy L.A.'s tent city invasion of the once lush City Hall lawn is under much scrutiny for its devastating effects on the grass. L.A. officials claim that lawn repair could cost the city up to $400,000.

The current brownish shade of the greenish two acres is evidence of maintenance neglect. Jon Kirk Mukri, general manager of the city's Department of Recreation and Parks, said that in the three weeks since the demonstration began, city crews have been unable to maintain the lawn and tile walkways surrounding City Hall, reports L.A. Now.

Mukri says that lawn revival might require sod replacement and the repair of more than 350 sprinklers. Since crews cannot easily peek underneath and around each of the hundreds of tents secured to the lawn, they have been unable to properly inspect for damages. The $400k is just an estimate, as noted by Mukri.

City Councilman Dennis Zine said that "their estimates are way out of range." Zine, who has pulled his fair share of weeds, added, "All you have to do is throw seed and fertilizer. Give me a grant and I can go to Home Depot and do it myself."

Perhaps some nice, big corporation will pick up the tab to rectify the lack of verdure...

Fescue is not indigenous to Southern California. Nice and pretty as "grass" is, it's a huge waste of water. If it's really that messed up, so be it, we didn't need it anyway.

  • here is an idea. How about we ask the occupy LA people if there are any people there that are unemployed and know about landscaping. Then pay them to fix the lawn after this is over. Probably get a deal.

where do these numbers come from. I have my gardener re-greened my lawn for three sessions at $65 each.

  • They're called "unions".
