Now Open: DTLA's The Pie Hole Serving Up Slices

Will the cupcake trend ever give way for something more rustic and hearty, like pie? Pie is personal, and it can also take on many flavors. So where can you go to stuff your pie hole with a few slices? How about the aptly named The Pie Hole, which officially opens today in Downtown's Arts District.

The small, simple place has a small, simple menu of savory, sweet, and hand pies, as well as ice cream, housemade whipped cream, coffees, and a couple of other sweet treats. Most intriguing on their sample opening day menu: Mac and Cheese pie (say what???) and Peanut Butter Pretzel. They use fresh, local ingredients, and work with L.A.'s Ground Work coffee for their own roast of beans.

While their pie creations are inventive, their philosophy is as basic as a cup of coffee and a slice: "We believe a pie shop is a living institution, a neighborhood gathering spot, and a welcoming environment for all," explains The Pie Hole's website.

And, pssst, they're right across from Wurstküche, so you can always save room for dessert after getting your sausage fix.

I was just about to make a Pushing Daisies reference, but was beaten to the punch.  Alas...

I hope each slice is personally served to me by Lee Pace.

  • Heavy dessert balances heavy dinner. Great idea.

  • It looks great and delicious. Maybe I can go there to have a try sometime.

    YES YES YES!!!

Pie is far superior to cupcakes! I hope this is a sign of LA making way for pie culture and shoving the mediocre cupcakes of now right off the table
