Occupy L.A. Activists & Others to Hold Candlelight Vigil for American Jobs Act
Occupy L.A. activists are joining forces with people from struggling L.A. communities, unemployed workers, community groups, clergy and labor organizations this evening in a candlelight vigil to pray that corporate greed won't kill good jobs.
The event is slated for 6pm and coincides with the eve of the U.S. Senate vote on the American Jobs Act. Good Jobs LA is urging Senators to stand with the 99% of those still battling an economy in crisis in lieu of supporting Wall Street banks and wealthy corporations.
According to the American Jobs Act website, the purpose of the act is simple: put more people back to work and put more money in the pockets of working Americans - without adding a dime to the deficit. The Act will save or create 125,400 California jobs, including 51,500 jobs building CA roads, highways, bridges and mass-transit, 37,300 jobs preventing layoffs of CA teachers, police and firefighters plus 36,600 jobs fixing CA's crumbling schools, as stated in today's release.
Should the Senate fail to vote in favor of the Act, Good Jobs LA will not fail to unleash more aggressive actions on Wednesday, October 12.
Participants should meet at the corner of Broadway and Aliso Street. The candlelight vigil will take place on the Broadway 101 Freeway overpass, a functionally obsolete overpass that could be fixed with the Act's passage. Attendees will be armed with signs, banners, candles and hope.
