Pray, Meditate and 'Die' with Occupy LA Today
Occupy LA is certainly keeping things interesting for participants. In addition to protests, one organization is offering an interfaith prayer this morning, another will be holding a yoga and meditation session at noon, and a third plans to host a "protest and die-in" towards the end of the day.
The first event is hosted by the Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, and is planned for today to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the invasion of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. The protest, led by religious leaders of all faiths, will begin at 9:00 a.m. and go until noon. According to a statement released by the organization, participants will engage in civil disobedience as they march from La Placita Church at 535 N. Main St to the downtown Federal Building, where a blessing will be conducted.
The event is calling for an end to the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for the money that's now funding the wars to be diverted back into domestic needs like healthcare, job creation and education. Also promised on the group's media statement are photo ops of "20 activists and religious leaders wearing vestments being arrested."
At noon, weary protesters who may need to rejuvenate their bodies and souls are invited to participate in a yoga and meditation session led by Donna DeCoster (Facebook).
At 4:30 p.m., things will move west as a group called AnswerLA begins a demonstration outside the Federal building in Westwood. Like the ICUJP's morning event, the "protest and die-in" will call attention to the cost, both in human life and in spending, of the war in Afghanistan. It will wrap up at 7:00 p.m.
