Pencil This In: Peter Bjorn and John, Tiki Party & The Moth
Though the weather outside is frightful, the things to do are so delightful. Head to Native Foods, The Spare Room or gLAnce Wine Bar for eats and drinks. Reward your ears at the El Rey. Or sit back and enjoy a show at the Hammer Museum, Zanzibar or The Victory Theatre Center. Whether your eyes, ears and/or stummies are hungry, L.A. will undoubtedly satiate tonight.
FOOD
Get your eat on and do good. Native Foods Cafe invites diners to tonight’s Native Community Day where "together we give back." The vegan eatery will donate a portion of profits to The Los Angeles Art of Yoga Project, a program designed to help girls in the juvenile justice system via early intervention and preparation for a positive future. Also, with the purchase of an entrĂ©e, side and Native Drink, guests receive a free dessert. And we know you need dessert tonight. Native Foods recommends the Organic Pumpkin Pie, served with a side of ginger creme. Hours vary depending on location.
MUSIC*
Peter Bjorn and John take the El Rey Theatre stage with Hanni El Khatib and DJ Darren Revell. You've got nothing to worry about. Experience the Swedish trio's pop wizardry tonight. 9pm-11:30pm; doors open at 8pm. $25.
PERFORMANCE
Roger Guenveur Smith and Marc Anthony Thompson premiere Twenty Twenty tonight at the Hammer Museum. This new multimedia performance spotlights black music created and fostered in L.A. from 1960 to 1980. Think Odetta's spirituals, free jazz, psychedelic rock and the funky soul of the Brothers Johnson. The show takes place in conjunction with Now Dig This! Art and Black Los Angeles 1960-1980, a current exhibition at the Hammer Museum. 7pm. Free. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Reservations are not accepted; RSVPs are not required.
STORYTELLING
The Moth LA returns this evening with a firsts-themed StorySLAM. Brave storytellers will memorize their five-minute, true tales and take the stage - if chosen - at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Non-storytellers can either volunteer to join a judging team or just sit back, listen and laugh. The Let's Be Frank food truck will be serving up 100% grass-fed beef franks for any and all hot dog lovers in the crowd. Doors open at 7pm. Stories begin at 7:30pm. $8 at the door.
THEATRE
Zack, Kelly, Screech, Lisa, Jessie, A.C. and Mr. Belding - the gang’s all here! Bayside High School Musical flashes back to the 80s and 90s with a musical parody of the beloved sitcom “Saved by the Bell.” The musical opened on August 10 and will take place double-feature-style every Wednesday through October at The Victory Theatre Center in Burbank until Jessie overdoes on caffeine pills, A.C. pulls a muscle or Zack’s hair goes flat. Tickets for 8pm shows cost $15; tickets for 10pm shows cost $10 and include two beers when booked online.
TIKI PARTY
Dust of that lei and head to The Spare Room tonight for A Night of Tiki, hosted by co-creators Marc Rose and Med Abrous and featuring guest bartenders Marcos Tello and John Lermayer. While swaying to island beats, festive partygoers will delight in sucking down island-inspired Kraken Rum cocktails. 10pm until close.
WINE TASTING
