L.A.-based photographer Jill Greenberg has unleashed her talents on Sunset Boulevard. Currently showcased on a billboard located on the northwest corner of Sunset Boulevard at Fairfax, "Glass Ceiling: American Girl Doll" is visible to those heading east. The provocative shot features a black vintage bathing suit and red high heels-clad woman spread eagle in a swimming pool. Her head remains just above the water.
Positioning Greenberg's work among the hordes of billboards on Sunset presents a "compelling juxtaposition of imagery and pictorial intent," says LAXART.
"Glass Ceiling" displays as part of LA Public Domain (L.A.P.D.), one of LAXART's public art initiatives. The initiatives serve as an effort to provide a "platform and support for ambitious and critical public interventions that address diverse audiences and respond directly to the complexities that mold contemporary urban spaces," according to LAXART, adding that L.A.P.D. focuses on "artistic and curatorial interventions in experimental contexts."
To capture her shot, Greenberg hired professional synchronized swimmers and, while scuba diving, photographed their performances in a Culver City swimming pool in 2010. "Glass Ceiling" marks the her return to past explorations of how the female body is portrayed.
The billboard, which was revealed on September 26, will display through October 9.
Have you seen it, L.A.?
