The L.A. Flower Market - the nation's largest flower market - just grew a little greener with the installation of a 280kw solar electric system. One of the largest privately-owned commercial systems in LADWP's administration, the system will harness the sun to generate energy for the 90-year-old market and its vendors via 1,246 solar panels. Created and installed by M&M Solar Solutions, the solo system administers solar energy throughout the market on eight separate rooftops.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, who is chair of the Energy and Environment Committee, says, per today's news release, "It is very fitting that the largest flower market in the United States is leading the way for the present and future of renewable energy. This solar project is an example of how sustainability and growth can coexist and flourish. I commend the Los Angeles Flower Market for championing green energy here in our city."

The new solar electric system serves as part of the L.A. Flower Market of The American Florists' Exchange's mission to greenify their facilities as much as possible. “As leaders in the flower business, we are very sensitive to the environment and have been working to make our facilities more energy efficient for a number of years. The installation of our new solar system was the natural next step in this effort,” said a representative from the American Florists' Exchange.

As part of LADWP's Solar Incentive Program (SIP), the project garnered a $606,754.46 rebate which will help offset the system's cost.

In the late 70's I worked for a few months at a flower shop. One of the best parts of the job was driving to the downtown Flower Market a couple times each week and just walking around for a few minutes before picking up our order. A bombardment of the senses was just wonderful.
