Police on the campus of California State University, Northridge, have called off a manhunt for an alleged gunman reportedly spotted at the school's central library.

The school remained open during the search, though the Oviatt Library was evacuated while authorities conducted their manhunt. Students who felt unsafe were urged to leave campus.

The information provided to authorities, and subsequently the students and the general public, was a bit confusing. L.A. Now reports:

Officials said it was unclear whether he was a student or whether he in fact had a gun.
"No one ever saw a person with a gun. This individual said he had one," [CSUN Campus Police Capt. Alfredo] Fernandez said.

Fernandez said the man did not threaten to hurt anyone but may have threatened to harm himself.

So far the man and his weapon have not turned up.
