UC Berkeley Student Republicans to Hold Deliberately Racist Bake Sale

bake_sale.jpg

A college Republican group at UC Berkeley is following in the footsteps of other campuses, including UC Irvine, and hosting a "Diversity Bake Sale."

Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Except that the sale will feature goods sold at different prices depending on the consumer's race, ethnicity and gender. White men will be charged $2, Asian men $1.50, Latino men $1, Black men $0.75, and Native Americans $0.25. Women will get $0.25 off any purchase.

KTLA reports that the stunt is meant to be a commentary on pending state legislation that would allow California universities to take race, gender, ethnicity and national origin into account when considering applications.

The Berkeley College Republicans say that the bake sale is in fact intended to be racist and discriminatory. According to KTLA, BCR President Shawn Lewis wrote the following response to students' and administrators' outrage over the event:

"We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point," in response to upheaval over the bake sale. "It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race (or) gender."

The event is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

  • I'd love a college education.  Been working on one for close to ten years (due to not having money and dropping out on several occasions) until I took a community college class in programming and learned most of the rest on my own.  Granted, teaching myself was a bit quicker, but I would have appreciated a more well-rounded education that didn't consist of working in a service-oriented job (even though working, by definition, means you're providing a service.  I recognized the irony.) and doing personal research, getting little sleep, etc.  It was mostly life getting in the way, really.

I'm reading articles that Asians are having a harder time getting into colleges and universities now because of the huge influx of Asian Americans at the colleges.  It actually creates a new set of requirements.  If the demonstration wasn't based on racism, maybe they would have seen this particular flaw in the system.  But, oh, isn't it more fun to call "reverse-racism" than to actually read up on the sociological effects of Affirmative Action and use things like "what actually happens" and "reality" to try to argue its effects?  Oh, damn those Asians and their work ethic creating socio-economic problems for their race!  This is based on race, isn't it...?

Also, great, getting foreign students in costs $50,600?  Doesn't that guarantee that the on-campus facilities can be replaced when needed?  What happens when they stop taking foreign applications and start taking in Californians?  Wouldn't that raise the price of tuition if the people in your college's Board of Directors needed to find a source of income to have adequate staff to teach you how to be a bigger prick?  Nice slogans, but you're adding nothing to this discussion.  Are you saying that the only college students able to get in are all foreign, or a percentage?  What is that percentage?  Could you be more specific with your slogan?  How do you determine that regular Californians are being bumped out?  Is it contrary or in tandem with the admissions process?

So, yes, there are problems already inherent in the system, and AA was created to fight back against those problems in order to secure a more racially diverse experience for the students on campus.  That's the idea: create a way for those under-priveleged "minorities" (I really hate that word) to be able to go to college so you don't have to lump yourself in with Joe Dirt shoveling shit into a can at the waste disposal branch office for 10 bucks an hour.  However, the population in most UC's nowadays are predominantly White and/or Asian-American, so a UC's acceptance standards really hasn't been doing much to help the cause.  Also, how is a higher GPA the only guage for a person's work ethic?  That's insane!  I've known people who work less hard because they were born smart.  I've known others who have paid people to do their assignments when I was in high school.  If a higher GPA means you're "more qualified" for a college education, then what is that walk down the lane and that piece of paper really worth?

What it really boils down to is definition and perspective.  This bake sale is governed by a simplistic view that the Conservatives have adopted as their own doctrine: that the worth of an education per individual is based on a merit system solely determined by numbers on a graph.  That knowledge is only given to those with a hard work ethic who have a higher GPA and therefore, should be the only ones to get accepted into a university.

In closing, your bake sale is racist because you're short-sighted.

  • Jen_Nunez

As a Latina, I always find affirmative action condescending and closetly bigoted. When I apply for something, I never know if I receive it because I'm truly qualified or because of some arbitrary government/PC standard. So you are saying to me, I need extra help, since my genes are geographically substandard.

What we really should be focus on is socioeconomic class. You can be any ethnicity or race and be poor. Also by the time college comes around, if a child isn't academically ready for the challenge, you shouldn't throw them into something that will set them up to fail. We need to take the hard road and work on early education benefits, so that there will be no need for educational privileges based on background, only scholarships for those financially in need.

  • If college were free like it is in most Socialist Democracies, this wouldn't even be an issue.  As far as minorities claiming they feel condescended to when they receive some advantage from affirmative action; Gee, you don't have to accept it if you really feel condescended to, do you?

  • Jen_Nunez

Yes, James. I know you don't have to except it. That's why I don't reply on the "what is your race/ethnicity" parts of applications. However, my name pretty much gives it away and the fact that I don't look 100% anglo.

  • Just tell them you don't want the help. Perhaps the minority person in line behind you will feel less "condescended to" and be grateful to take the help in your place.

  • " This is the worst example of attempts to suppress 1st Amendment rights that I have seen in a long time! "

No one has stopped them. The first amendment works both ways you know. These Repubies are free to express racism, intolerance and ignorance. Other students who are more enlightened are free to disagree with them and express their disagreement.

As far as the tea party not being racist, here's one of them who is too dumb to spell his racial slur correctly. And he's a leader...

    http://www.google.com/imgres?q...

  • It's not racist, it's a parody of what is an obvious truth... if you are a woman or a minority you get special treatment. Is freedom of speech/expression only for Dems/libs? This is the worst example of attempts to suppress 1st Amendment rights that I have seen in a long time! Many people were offended by the Slut Walks but that was their right to express themselves. Many people are offended by gay rights parades with half-naked men fondling each other but that is their right. Young Repubs are composed of every possible race, ethnicity, and sex. Why are they not able to express their rights without the media in a frenzy!!!!
My family is biracial and I am angry that the plantation known as the Democratic Party continues to treat blacks/minorities as if they are ignorant, of one voice, and in need of 'master' (aka govt) to take care of them. Give me an Allen West, Herman Cain, Condaleeza Rice, Michelle Malkin, or any one of many minority leaders who do not follow the brainwashed masses!!! In spite of liberal media attempts to portray Tea Party members as racist, there are many women & minorities in their ranks. Many people are intelligent enough to know that it is the individual, not the race or sex, that determines how far you go in life. I feel sorry for those among you who are brainwashed!

  • NoHollyMedia

I admire your attempt to point out that these young Republicans have the same first amendment rights to parody that any other group would have.  Sadly, though, liberals, who by definition should be accepting of the rights of all to have any view point that individual chooses, don't exist anymore.  They throw vitriol and arrogantly accuse anyone that does not see the issues exactly as they do as being ignorant.  Intolerance is ignorant - no matter what your race, 'class' or political leanings.  There are few true liberals in the democratic party.  I have many good friends that are truly liberal in all the best meaning of the word. They have well researched opinions on various cultural and political issues. They thoughtfully, and often passionately, make their argument to me and we have a robust discussion.  These true liberals however always treat me with respect if we do not agree 100%.  By speaking to me in a thoughtful manner, I hear their message and always am open to hearing their views, I might change my stance on an issue, I might give them another perspective they had not previously considered.  What the 'liberal' posters on this string, and what most 'liberals' in general are doing in increasing numbers is acting with the most intolerant behavior that stops dialogue and any sort of considered debate.  The inclination seems to be to attempt to verbally annihilate those with differing viewpoints. They shut down the dialogue by calling Republican's or any conservative leaning group (especially white Christians) stupid, or more colorful characterizations as "E." eloquently responded to one poster above, "you sound f***ing nuts right now".  Hate speech in America is still allowed (and encourage by these types of liberals)  - as long as it is aimed at the obese or Republicans.

How quickly do you think one of them will now call me a "fat Republican idiot" or something similar since I have an opposing opinion?

I assure you I can handle the ignorant attacks that come in place of thoughtful debate.

  • Republicans, racists, who's surprised?

  • I am a part Native American woman and I highly approve of the bake sale.  I am tired of being treated as if I am stupid, ignorant, etc. and can only make it in life by being given special privileges!

  • I guess you and Ward Connerly can get together and bemoan that affirmative action system that you both benefited from. That'll certainly get you in good with the Republicans. (just don't expect them to let you walk through the front door of their country club)

  • Ricky Andres

Wow. I love a good bargain.

  • If I was a Native American woman I'd head over to that bake sale and CLEAN HOUSE.

  • I am a part Native American woman and I highly approve of the bake sale.  I am tired of being treated as if I am stupid, ignorant, etc. and can only make it in life by being given special privileges!

What bothers Californians is that by the decision of the UC Board of Regents and President Yudof FOREIGNERS with a passport and $50,600 are DISPLACING qualified Californians because they pay $50,600.

Instate Californians displaced for Foreigners because they pay $50,600.

    Foreigners win instate Californians loose.

As the daughter of a former teacher/professor/NEA rep; Ill be happy to address this one.

Take shots at Affirmative Action in the admissions process if youd like. Its necessary.

The bottom line is this. The Admissions Process for most colleges inside the United States, save for HBCUs, are geared and designed to keep all minorities and financially struggling persons from entering colleges. If people would do simple research into the schools they are going to, they would find this out fairly quickly.

Los Angeles and UCLA is an easy example. "The (Admissions) System" works like this. Did you know what High School you went to and what area its in affects your applications? If you are from a rich, affluent school or a school with a High state ranking, you receive more credit for getting in. Usually these are schools in predominately wealthy, white areas. If you are from a High School in a Lower class area or Low State ranking (which usually have lower scores by default of no funding in those areas), they actually take away credit for going to those schools, as their criteria are not considered "as complicated" as the schools with the better scores and money. With these rules alone, it automatically drops out about 50% of any "minority" from even HAVING a chance to get in. I watched as my best friend, Salutatorian of Inglewood High School (4.2 GPA, all american scholar, head cheerleader, championship CIF tennis player, ect) was waitlisted at UCLA while others with 3.4 GPA and half the academic achievements (if any) from schools like El Camino and other Valley/Santa Barbara area HS were allowed in from the start.

Then schools sit around and wonder why there are very few nationalities in their school, other than Asian; possibly Indian and Direct African Decent. Its because theres something wrong.

Also, it is historically proven that the SATs are not geared towards the exact same lower class high schools and students I just mentioned. These are standardized tests that again are geared towards schools in affluent, white areas. In short, "The (Admissions) System" is designed for the success and acheivements of rich, probably white males.

Im really not making any of this up, and theres so much more to it that doesnt even go here. So, with all this information out there... at this point, if youre still barking about there being "unequality" or "reverse racism..." youre highly uneducated about the american education system; possibly american history as a whole.

Please stop with this nonsense. Either change the Admissions System or allow Affirmative Action. Because they are coming for one of those.

But whatthefuckever youre not gonna read this and even if you do, youll deny or blatently not give a fuck.

  • i would figure out the difference between nationality and ethnicity first. until then, you sound like a whiny moron who's made up an elaborate argument based on one friend's rejection. admissions can easily tell if you're a cocky bastard or not. sounds like your friend was.

I 100% agree that colleges should give more consideration to students that attend some high schools and less credit to students attending other high schools.  I think it is unfortunate that the schools that are higher performing will skew white and middle and upper class but the reality is that there are secondary schools in this country that give high school diplomas to massive amounts of students that did not earn it BECAUSE of affirmative action type programs in education.

My sister just began teaching at an inner-city high school in Atlanta after getting her Masters in Education from USC.  Her specialty was to work to help this community in which she now works, and the things she as told me that goes on in that low income, 90+% minority school is so shocking that I can UNDERSTAND why colleges give more weight to a high school diploma from certain high schools.
She has been shocked by the destruction caused by the crazy liberal program (Bush had even a single liberal idea? Yes he did) "No child left behind" and she is even MORE concerned about the Bill Gates led influence on the even more disastrous Obama initiative "Race to the Top" (how more direct can that name be about advancing minority opportunities?)  My sister would love to see minority academic performance advance - but the problems with that are not solved by favoring any group just because the are a minority or from a low-income family.  Incentives on anything other than personal achievement is inherently racist and solves nothing.

Here is a concrete example of my assertion.  Because of "No Child Left Behind" and the practice of offering assistance to lower achieving students, about 30% of the students in her classes, average age of 15, are taken to another room by her aide during testing so that this aide CAN READ THE QUESTIONS AND CHOICES OF ANSWERS (the schools mandate that tests be multiple choice, never essay or short answer because that is biased against minority students that cannot read or write) OUT LOUD TO THESE STUDENTS!

Other shocking things she has learned as a first year teacher?  The administration tells teachers not to give homework because most students will not do it.  The one time she does give it, less than15 of her total role of 130 students across 6 class periods turned it in and by LAW she has to give those that did nothing a 50.  No 0's are allowed ever!  she spends most of her day not teaching, but herding cats.  Trying to get 15 year old's to sit down and be quiet.

The first two weeks of the school year was spent teaching the students rules of behavior, like not touching other students or being unruly or using profane language.  She is told to f*** off by student (or some variation) to her face multiple times per week. She would get in trouble with the administration if she sent them to the office for this.  These schools are so out of control they are only ever really disciplined when actual physical violence occurs.  When she calls the parents, almost always a mother or grandmother are the only parent the child has, the parents do not support the teachers.  She has been told more than once that she probably deserved what their child said to her!

Did you behave like this in High School? I had a couple of hours homework every night.  I had research papers every semester.  If I had said f*** even without saying it at my teacher I would have been suspended from school. I knew that I had to stay in my seat, and that I had to keep my hands to myself, and that I could not be talking during the class lecture.  I knew this and the other students, with one or two discipline cases as exception, all knew this too.  THESE POLICIES OF CODDLING STUDENTS OF LESSER MEANS OR FROM A MINORITY BACKGROUND CREATES THESE ISSUES! The diploma from the high school where she teaches is not the same value as the diploma I earned.  Not even close.  It does them no favors.  They get a high school diploma but if they are illiterate what good has these Affirmative Action based programs done these kids?

It is truly sad because she has several students that want to learn and are college material - my sister offers to tutor them one on one after school - she even created an academic league at the school - but there is too much chaos for them to truly get a lot of high school.

THE VALUE OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA's in AMERICA today is extremely different depending on where the student attended school.  This has been caused by affirmative action and other well-meaning social programs to some extent.  The real failing here is societal.  We have a President that is literally an African-American.  Racism will never fully go away, human nature is for people to group themselves in those that are similar to them, but a truly racist nation would not have elected President Obama.  This is a cultural issue.  The black community has to change.  Academics and citizenship need to be emphasized at home.  Parents need to assist teachers and discipline their children for being uncooperative at school and we should stop passing students that are illiterate because they have a 'right' to a high school diploma.

  • Hey now, ECC is a JC. The requirements for transfer are  different than those for high schoolers. I'm not going to argue over whether that is fair or not (I know there is some major prejudice against transfers and JC's. Having come from a highly competitive [and diverse, and top ranking] public magnet, then doing the whole transfer thing [to UCLA], I could say lots about that from all different view points), but don't lump the admissions of JC transfers with high schoolers.

That being said, I agree, it's a fucked up system. I hope we can work to reduce these horrible inequalities from the ground up.  Like I learned in my Learning Disabilities course with professor Adelman, we need a wholly integrated approach to addressing these issues from the ground up from day 1 of people's lives. Entire communities, governments, family, police, fire, businesses, EVERYBODY needs to work to help improve our schools, our social programs, our lives, and effectively, our country. But unfortunately there are so many people who do not understand basic sociology and psychology and just believe in a naive perfect world where anybody can "do anything" because "this is america," completely disregarding all of the different barriers people experience in their lives.

  • E.

    exactly wtf she just said.

  • ucla11bruins

So, you spend your post ranting about the injustices of UCLA admissions against minorities and geographic prejudices and then state at the end that the issue is actually gender based. I must ask then, why are there more women than men attending UCLA if the system is apparently biased in favor men?

Furthermore, UCLA actively takes steps to make its admissions process more holistic--heck they even directly weighted family income to a higher degree this past year and what happened? Minority attendance went down. The issues are far more complex than your suggest.

The dream of the benefits of a four year degree is a false one to begin with. A degree means less and less and though it may serve as a perceived barrier to "the good life", average return on money invested in a community college degree versus a 4 year degree is far better is only marginally better at a four year school unless you major in a hard science.

Sure the system may be biased against those who have had 'disadvantaged' upbringings, but sadly, a degree doesn't guarantee success. One must produce in the work place to garner benefits. If you're vocabulary isn't up to par or your speaking skills aren't up to corporate expectations, you're probably not going to stand out and advance with that degree anyway. Tutoring on campuses is disappearing.
That being said, AAP (Academic Advancement Program) at UCLA is the only tutoring available. The university has gotten to the point of DISADVANTAGING those who are so called advantaged. How does this help overall economic productivity? What it actually does it reduce the value of my degree. Whoopee. But I have a job. And I graduated in June of this year. And paid my way through on my own. -someone who 'whatthef**ckever' doesn't care and denies everything you say.

    Imperialistic Privilege strikes again.

"So, you spend your post ranting about the injustices of UCLA admissions

that the issue is actually gender based. I must ask then, why are there
more women than men attending UCLA if the system is apparently biased in

LOL. Womp womp womp. Someone cant read.
Wrong. Pay attention please and try again. What I was really doing was trying to be polite and gentle in saying that the Academic System, as well as many "systems" within American Society are defaulted to benefit Whites Only, both male and female, as well as anyone with money only. As it has been for several decades. Both obvious in the Justice and Education systems. Maybe I should have been more direct with what I was saying, but some people need to have it spelled out for them.

Funny. If you didnt instantly close your mind and see it as a rant, your comprehension levels might rights, and you might not need Captain Obvious to wave the flag right in front of your face. Your tone was disrespectful in your reply; I'd just like to site that as you obviously have hurt feelings about the truth.

    Next.

"Furthermore, UCLA actively takes steps to make its admissions process
more holistic--heck they even directly weighted family income to a
higher degree this past year and what happened? Minority attendance went
down. The issues are far more complex than your suggest. "

No shit. Of course the topic is way more complex and than what I can fit into a short rant on a site. Im not here to have a thesis type discussion over it; I just thought I would offer perspective from someone whose friend went to UCLA, who went to UCLA herself, whose mother WENT to UCLA, TAUGHT at UCLA and did admissions at UCLA before retiring. So please. I suggest that if you talk about "holistic," dont try to play down the inherent racism that is built into the ALL UC system admissions. You will lose that battle quickly.

I mean, we can put it all the way out there. Even the way parking passes at UCLA are inherently designed to leave people who live more than 15 miles away assed out, which is really just ass backwards. You dont want to get into it. Youre really not trying to battle.

Minority admissions went down because without Affirmative Action in place, the inherently racist loopholes and rules instantly went back into place, leaving out minorities as designed. PERIOD, POINTBLANK. But Id like to see your thoughts on why its so hard for minorities to get into college. As it has been for decades. Im sure it will be some spew on "they are naturally inferior" type pathetic mess.

And then you know, there is that whole issue of denying the majority anyone who was not White an education until Brown vs. Board of Education 1954. And changing admission rules even back then to allow BASIC EDUCATION RIGHTS FOR ALL.

To be polite... the fuck is wrong with you? What classes did you take at UCLA and miss all of this? Selective memory on American History that benefits white people will not be allowed in this discussion.

So you openly admit that there is BIAS against the 'disadvantaged' (aka: minority; broke.) Thank you. Just start there and really think about that. Why is it okay for THEM to be 'disadvantaged' and YOU to have the 'advantage...' and openly abuse this advantage obviously. If you were a human being of any decency... why wouldnt you want to SHARE the advantages that you (wrongfully) create for yourselves.

If your vocab or speaking skills arent up to par, then that sounds like a personal problem for me. You mean to tell me you didnt learn how to act like a competent adult in FOUR YEARS of college? You didnt go to any seminars at UCLA extensions on how to handle yourself in an interview and whatnot? You arent trying hard enough.

As far as tutoring? Cry me a river. Your mad because theres only ONE support system for like, the 12 blacks, and 17 latinos who might need help? LoL. You cant play that with me. There are TONS of tutoring places for everyone, EVERYWHERE. Dont tell that lie. And dont be a part of a frat/sorority... you should have a network of people around you that will keep you taken care of; homework, tutoring, WHATEVER.

Oh my God. Its like, Jesus Christ. You cant be this stupid. What you are doing right now is being angry and blatantly blind to the truth because this basically takes away from the 'advantages' that you so openly brag about having, as proven by YOUR previous quote AND the quote below...

"That being said, AAP (Academic Advancement Program) at UCLA is the only
tutoring available. The university has gotten to the point of
DISADVANTAGING those who are so called advantaged. How does this help

Your "advantage" isnt "so called." Its actual and real and has been since the dawn of modern america. Please use the education you just paid a few thousand dollars to finish. Come on. Did you not take a FEW Sociology classes?

What it is is you sound outright bitter about graduating from UCLA and not having any real economic prospects for whateverthefuckitis you majored in. Youre mad because the playing field is leveled and you have to compete with a LOT of non-whites (and whites, sweetie, minorites arent the only one taking your jobs).

If you want to be mad the (admittedly painful) lack of 'economic productivity,' be mad at the (conservative) politicians who made it possible for businesses and jobs to receive HUGE tax breaks for sending their jobs overseas. Be mad at the investment banks who swindled everyone so hard that it basically bottomed out the job market and any extra money that could go to hiring more people. Like yourself.

The fuck do minorities going to school with you (and who have always been here anyways) have to do with you not getting a job. Did you ever thing you dont have a job because you know... your resume might not be that strong? You know. Taking personal responsibility for yourself and your situation.

Amazing. You just equated Affirmative Action to being responsible for the supposed "reducition in the value of your degree." LMMFAO. Jesus Christ. You sound fucking nuts right now.

I walked out of UCLA in 2005 and had no problem with a job. I know 6 years is a whole other world right now, but yeah. I cant relate to your bitterness. I networked and interned unpaid for 2 years before securing my career. Shit is hard. Life is hard. Nothing is going to be handed to you, since with your "advantages..." YOU GET SHIT HANDED TO YOU 90% OF THE TIME. And when you dont, you throw fits of this psychotic "reverse racism" with no basis for this idiotic ideal, blaming everything but yourself and the reality of the situation. There are just no jobs out there. And its not "the minorities" fault.

Its not that you dont care, its just that you are blinded by Imperialistic White Privilege. Which is waaaay worse. waaaaaaaaaaaaaay worse.
    This is crazy.
White Privilege is fucking crazy. And Real.

Please go read or youtube Tim Wise. NOW. And try to think about others rather than yourself. Its important.

All that time at UCLA, and you sound like an idiot. What a waste. I know a few 'disadvantage' folks who would have loved (and rightfully earned) your spot and did more with the education you received than you are doing right now.

See syllabus of sociology M175. I think you're the close minded one and perhaps I would take more time to explain that I was chiefly playing devils advocate but also that first and foremost you should reevaluate what thus country has chosen to be the chief purpose of higher education--an inherently unequal sorting mechanism. That's not going to change

you advocate for the devil and at some point, you end up in hell. remember that.

so youre mad that minorities are being let in to balance out of the disadvantages that white males and the system have put in front of them for years. im trying to explain why all of this is wrong and why everyone should have equal access to education, but IM the close minded one? no buddy. stop that projection of your crazy. wont work here.

bottom line is that most Whites who are against this are very well aware that this takes away from their "White Privilege" and are upset that they actually have to come to terms with reality. period.

The unequal sorting mechanism youre talking about? Its based on racism. And even if it wasnt... why would you want something in place that is divisive to your country? Oh thats right. Whites only. Still. Till this day. Segregation exists and when you try to point it out and take it away, it becomes "reverse racism."

Just stop. Please. This is the type of shit that keeps humanity from evolving as a whole.

Have some fucking understanding and empathy for someone other than yourself.

And go watch Tim Wise on youtube NOW.

FOREIGN people are the new Americans. You had better hope they stay and contribute to the US economy. The idea behind US education is either a) educate them here and add them to the brain roll of US citizens or b) educate them as Americans and send them abroad to act as US educated ambassadors. Most developing countries have US educated advisors. It's a win-win.
