A Whole New World (of Malfunctioning Magic Carpets) at Disneyland

Aladdin and Jasmine experienced a whole new horror on Sunday afternoon during "Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular" at California Adventure. While soaring over the audience, the not-so-magic carpet malfunctioned and left both performers hanging above the crowd by their harnesses.

The 4:45pm show was suspended as crew members scrambled to fix the carpet. A calm, robotic male voice explained via the speakers, "This performance cannot continue. We regret any inconvenience this may have caused you." Audience members were instructed to evacuate by the voice. "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. At this time, we ask that you please exit through the doors on your right. Thank you."

No injuries were reported. "As is our safety practice, both performers were harnessed and they were uninjured," said Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown, according to L.A. Now.

Here's how the famous ride originally triumphed.

  • We appreciate you take the time to put this together.

  • We are annual passholders and were seated in Ochestra Center/Center, under the Magic Carpet. Aladdin's hat nearly fell in my daughter's lap. We are a Thespian family and are glad that the actors and crew are alright. Hope to see all the cast again real soon. Break a leg!

  • They should rename the show to "Aladdin: Turn Off the Dark."

  • When i was there in Feb same thing happened

  • This exact same thing happened when I saw this show there something like eight years ago, and I got the feeling that it was a pretty regular occurrence...?
