There Won't Be a $15.50 Flat Rate Minimum To Cab it From BUR After All

It turns out Burbank can't quite force a $15.50 minimum rate on cab fares originating from Bob Hope Airport as initially proposed and passed. That base fare isn't going to happen after all.

A City of Burbank news release explains:

After further review by the Burbank City Attorney’s Office, the action of the Burbank Traffic Commission to implement a minimum fare of $15.50 for all taxi cab rides originating at Bob Hope Airport has been determined to be beyond its authority at this time.

Cab drivers, fed up of circling around the airport loop just to be one of a glut of cabs awaiting to collect passengers going blocks from the airport, had asked for support from G & S Transit Management, Inc. to get a larger base fare implemented.

“We would like it to be clear that we are not saying it is beyond the City’s authority to allow minimum taxicab fares to be charged in Burbank,” says Richard Morillo of the City Attorney’s Office. “Our conclusion is based solely on our view that a minimum fare is not allowed under the taxicab ordinance as currently written.”

Here's the current Burbank cab fare structure:

$2.65 Flag drop (First 1/9 mile or 37 seconds or fraction thereof)
$0.30 for each additional 1/9 mile or thereafter ($2.70 per mile)
$0.30 for each 37 seconds of waiting time and/or traffic delay ($29.19/hour wait)
$2.50 Surcharge for trips originating at Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport

BUR can't be the only airport in the United States with this perceived problem. How is this handled at other airports?

taking a taxi anywhere else is an easy and relatively inexpensive venture. In LA its miserable, obviously cabs arent the solution when everyone has a car.

Here is the fare structure L.A. cab drivers should be responsible for. With the exception of the 'glare' fee which is to be paid individually, the total will be split evenly between each passenger once arriving at the destination.

• $3.00 Initial whiff of putrid smell in cab
• $0.75 for each additional 1/9 mile or thereafter ($6.75 per mile)
• $0.75 for each 37 seconds of waiting time ($36.00/hour wait)
• $8.50 Surcharge for every surly glare given by driver
• $12.00 Surcharge for struggling to understand broken English
• $20.00 Surcharge for having to give constant directions

If it is that much of a pain for the cabbies, then don't pick up passengers at the airport. Or set your own flat fee for pick ups there. Why does this need to be government mandated?

Yes, and the next time you go to the airport, don't complain about the lack of cabs there.

I have friends and I am not above calling a cab and waiting for it to get there. Why would I say for cabs to stop going and then complain about them not being there?
