Karen Lee Shumey, a 65-year-old longtime middle-school teacher, was shot and killed in San Luis Obispo on Saturday afternoon. Her son, Christopher Shumey, is the alleged killer.

When police officers arrived at Christopher's apartment on Saturday to investigate a report of gunshots, the 34-year-old male opened fire on them. No officers were injured, and they eventually persuaded Christopher to surrender. Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered Karen's body.

Karen was visiting her son on Saturday, and the two began to argue. Details on the dispute have not yet been released.

Christopher was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and assault with a firearm. He is currently being held at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.

The district's crisis team reported to Vandenberg Middle School at Vandenberg Air Force Base where Karen taught for 20 years. Psychologists and counselors are slated to visit Cabrillo High School where many of Karen's past students are enrolled.
