The French Are Coming! OohLaL.A. Festival to Rock El Rey
Francophiles, mark your calendars as "très occupé" on 9/29, 9/30 and 10/1. The third annual OohLaL.A. Festival hosts its diverse French music extravaganza at the El Rey Theatre for three nights of la musique spectaculaire.
The first night welcomes Nouvelle Vague stateside to perform "Dawn of Innocence," an exclusive musical directed by Jean Charles de Castelbajac. “I used Nouvelle Vague as a time machine to take me back to the pop colors and the darker tones of the ‘80s, a decade that was both glamorous and somber at the same time,” said de Castelbajac in a press release. Englishman Hugh Coltman will also perform on Thursday night, delighting the audience with his "delicate folk/soul ballads tainted with bossa nova flavor."
Friday night honors France's love affair with Africa. Tinariwen, the Tuareg collective that hails from Kidal, will rock their "rebellious blues, rootsy rock 'n' roll" sound mixed with "West African melodies and desert rhythms." Hindi Zahra, a Berber girl born in Morocco, will open the musical evening, showcasing her folk tunes combined with "Moroccan roots, jazz vibes and Gnawa trance."
The third and final night of the festival guarantees to ignite a dance party on the El Rey floor with a "mélange of the French electronic elite." The four Frenchmen of Chateau Marmont, Feadz, DJ Cam and Birdy Nam Nam will take the stage to culminate the trio of musical eves. Their entrancing beats will force even the grimmest of wallflowers pick up their pieds and shake their derrières.
Tickets for the Thursday and Friday shows cost $30 each, Saturday's dance party is $25 and three-day passes are $75. To avoid Ticketmaster's ever-increasing fees, tickets can also be purchased at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park as well as at the El Rey on the day of the show.
