A Park Popped Up in That Parking Spot! Yes: It's Park[ing] Day L.A.

CommunityWalk Map - Park[ing] Day LA - 2011

If you notice several parking spaces around town being used as gathering places for plants, art, furniture, and people, you aren't losing your mind: You're witnessing the annual Park[ing] Day L.A.

Community get-togethers, eco-chic, art-centric, work spaces, green havens, and other specially-designed spaces have been set up all over Los Angeles in parking spaces today, and you are urged to not just drive or bike or walk by, but rather stop, say hi, chat, and relax.

The goal of Park[ing] Day, which began in San Francisco in 2005, is to show urban-dwelling Americans that we could use a little more green space in the midst of our concrete jungles. The spaces transform into eclectic multi-purpose patches of land where visitors can find entertainment, information, relaxation, and community.

Use the official Park[ing] Day L.A. 2011 map to find the pop-up parks near you. Take some photos, and share with us via Twitter (@LAist), e-mail, or our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr.

We had a parking day out here in Pacoima! We took over two spaces in front of the library, made seed bombs (and even a seed armadillo!), ate paletas, talked about parks! All in all a great day and reminder for how important open space is in communities all across the city, and especially park-poor neighborhoods.  There are some great photos up at our website - www.pacoimabeautiful.org
