TV Junkie: 'Sunny' & 'Archer' Premiere Tonight; Doofus DGA Report

FX strikes again tonight with the season premieres of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" (see vid clip above) and "Archer." Enjoy "Sunny" as it may be the last season for this show. Meanwhile "Archer" has really stepped into the limelight as of halfway through last season and it will again be pushing all sorts of boundaries.

Stupid Things In The Media: Today's example is an article referencing a new report from The Directors Guild of America that looks at the diversity of directors who helped create episodic television in the 2010-2011 season. The report found several shows, including HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Bored To Death" to be directed almost exclusively by white males. The problem I have with this conclusion directed at these two shows in particular is that the report does not take into account that these shows have only a handful of shows per season: 10 for "Curb" and 8 for "Bored." The report also does not take into account the relationship that the director has with other aspects of the show. In the case of "Curb," almost all of the directors were also writers on the show and had long experience with the form of non-scripted acting that makes the show such a success. On the flip side, will "Bored To Death" get commendations from the Producers Guild of America for having 3 of its 6 producers be female or will "Bored To Death" be condemned by the Screen Actors Guild because the show's 3 protagonists are white males?

The DGA is lacking some common sense criteria as it applies to these kinds of reports.

Meanwhile, Larry David, who can do no right in the eyes of the DGA, is auctioning off a 20 minute pitch meeting with himself to the highest bidder as a benefit for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. You can also bid for meetups with Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Saget, and even an audition for Adult Swim's "Childrens Hospital" at the CharityBuzz website.

It's Always Sunny is definitely in no danger of going anywhere. It's wildly popular and doesn't seem too costly to make. I was a little worried after last season too. It just didn't have the spark, but a lot of that probably had to do with Dee being pregnant, forcing them to write s storyline around that. This season they seem back to true form so I don't foresee any problems with it for a long time. Good thing because this is one of my favorite comedies on TV. My other favorite is Archer, which is also on FX, makes me glad I'm not a DirecTV customer since they're going through that contract dispute with Fox and will almost certainly be losing FX and a bunch of other Fox owned channels. Being a DISH Network customer / employee I don't have to worry about that with the long term contract that DISH and Fox have but I feel bad for the Direct customers that are going to be missing out starting in November.

"Enjoy "Sunny" as it may be the last season for this show."

I guess you didn't hear they were recently renewed for season 8, 9 and possibly 10?

  • That was my comment in the last post as well. They're not going anywhere anytime soon.
