On September 11 the famous Cardiff-by-the-Sea statue dubbed formally as "Magic Carpet Ride" and informally as "Cardiff Kook" was found dressed proudly in firefighter garb to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The patriotic young surfer wore complete firefighter gear while holding an American flag in his right hand. A yellow placard reading "Never Forget 9/11 United We Stand" hung below the surfer's feet.

The costume designers have not been identified.

In August the civic statue suffered a pterosaur-esque bird attack.
