Gumby Attempts to Rob 7-Eleven, Pokey MIA
Gumby - the beloved green clay humanoid - has assumed a life of crime. He reportedly attempted to rob a 7-Eleven in San Diego on Monday. Pokey has not been listed as an accomplice.
Police are currently searching for a man who dressed as the stop motion animation character and tried to rob the convenience store. The incident occurred just after midnight on Labor Day at the store on Carmel Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos, reports KGTV.
Gumby The bandit initially approached the clerk asking for cigarettes and then declared, "This is a robbery." Stunned, the clerk assumed the situation was a joke and replied, "Come on man, don’t waste my time. I have things to do." Fumbling with his costume, the impersonator claimed he had a gun. According to the report, the man failed to actually rob the store, and the clerk actually retrieved $0.27 that the man dropped while searching for his gun.
The clerk was so certain that the incident was a joke that he never called the police. The entire scene was caught on the store's surveillance cameras, and when the clerk's boss reviewed the footage later on Monday morning, he involved authorities.
"Yeah, it's hilarious to look at it on the video," said San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen. "But, it is a very serious crime and we take it very seriously."
Surveillance footage clearly shows the face of the accomplice, and police are working to confirm his identity.
Anyone with information on this bizarre thievery attempt should call San Diego Police at (619) 531-2000.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to the capture of "Gumby" and his accomplice.
