California Senate Says 'No, Thank You' to Shark Fin Soup
You know what we could really NOT go for right now? A piping hot bowl of shark fin soup. And thankfully the California Senate concurs.
A bill - AB376 - that would ban the sale, possession and distribution of shark fins passed 25-9 on Tuesday following a Senate debate.
Governor Brown now holds the future of the bill in his hands.
Indulgers of the Chinese delicacy and shark hunters alike will surely be disheartened should the bill be enacted into law. But animal rights advocates will rightfully rejoice in its necessity.
During Tuesday's Senate meeting, Senator Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, discussed certain scientific evidence of a decrease in the shark population. AB376 supporters say fins are sliced from live sharks, and the ocean predators are left to bleed to death in their natural habitat. A market for shark meat does not exist. "It is the fin that is the problem, and therefore it is the fin the bill addresses," said Simitian.
