Berkeley Man Transforms Dumpster into Livable Dwelling
Gregory Kloehn of Berkeley, CA championed a personal project in his garage to define "home." Using the shell of a dumpster, Kloehn has fashioned a cramped but accommodating shelter.
In local filmmaker Kim Aronson's video, "Luxury Living... with a twist!" posted by Curbed LA, Kloehn invites viewers into his crafty abode and explains his mission.
"Just trying to break down what the home can be. What is it? What the components are... What do you need? Is it toilets and a kitchen and a roof? Or is it location? Or is it a house that expresses yourself? I don't know. I think for everyone it's a little bit different. But for me, I'm just trying to deconstruct what a home can be - how can you turn different objects into a home - and see if I can put everything in that a home has inside of a dumpster, and if I can make it nice enough where perhaps someone would like to live in it."
Complete with "storage for your food stuffs," a gas tank to fuel interior cooking devices and the outdoor BBQ, a water storage system that holds about six gallons of water, an electrical system with lights and two power strips plus a toilet, Kloehn's dumpster pad provides tools for life's basic necessities.
But he didn't stop at the fundamentals. Kloehn spruced up the joint with granite counter tops, hardwood floors and a commercial kitchen boasting stainless steal appliances. He also plans to add a TV.
"I think I made a nice little home out of a garbage can," says Kloehn.
We're impressed. Angelenos, would you opt to reside in Kloehn's luxury dumpster?
