Get It While You Can, Kids: Bill Banning Teens From Tanning Beds Heads to Governor's Desk
Are you addicted to tanning?
If you're under 18, you may only have a few months left to get your fix. When the dark days of January arrive, it may no longer be legal for teens to don the goggles and go under the ultraviolet lights.
Right now a bill banning California teens from tanning beds is heading over to Governor Jerry Brown for his signature, having already passed the state senate and assembly.
The bill has support from dermatologists, doctor groups and health insurance companies, who cited evidence showing that the earlier you start tanning, the more likely you are to develop melanoma and premature wrinkles (OK, I just added that last one).
The Indoor Tanning Association opposed the bill for cutting into their biz with its nanny-state approach: "If such a law were to pass, a 17-year-old could drive a car, get married, have children, go off to college, join the military and not be allowed to suntan indoors."
This law would make California the first state in the nation to ban indoor tanning for teens.
We expect to see more teens showing up to prom with that unfortunate oompa loompa orange faux-tan glow.
