Ambitious thieves attempted a grand entrance into Ammo Bros in Cerritos on Monday morning. Their exit, however, was not so glorious.

Investigators arrived at the scene around 4:40am to find that a blue and white 1984 Chevrolet van had crashed into the front doors of the business. The van was reported stolen from Bellflower on Saturday evening, and deputies quickly ruled that the vehicle was used as a battering ram for an attempted firearms and ammunition burglary.

The wannabe gun thieves' master plan was foiled by the store owner's extraordinary security measures. Despite the van's impact, the suspects failed to gain entry to the store and fled empty-handed.

“Due to the nature of the crime, where the suspects were presumably targeting firearms, detectives are actively investigating the incident,” said Lieutenant Richard Harpham. “Had the suspects been successful and the guns were on the street, it would present an inherent danger to the public.”

Cerritos Station detectives are searching for two or three male suspects and believe a gray sedan and champagne colored Ford Excursion may have been the getaway vehicles.

Detectives urge anyone with information to call Cerritos Station Detectives at 562.860.0044. Anonymous tipsters should contact Crime Stoppers by dialing 800.222.TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus the tip to CRIMES (274637) or using the Crime Stoppers website.

  • That's a nice van...

  • It doesn't sound like the store owners security measures were "excessive" at all. Why do you think they were?

Let's go with "extraordinary." Thanks for reading, Doran!
