The Dutch are coming! And they're coming to help. The Netherlands boasts a successful bicycle network throughout the entire country. If you've visited Amsterdam and can remember your trip, you will agree that they've mastered the art of both transportation and recreational cycling.

Lucky for L.A., The Consulate General of the Netherlands in conjunction with the City of Los Angeles and the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) are hosting ThinkBike Los Angeles, "a unique, bi-national bicycle promotion and design workshop," says the workshop's website.

Slated for two days in September, the series of workshops will be championed by Dutch bikeway design experts "to discuss how the Netherlands has successfully implemented a comprehensive program to promote cycling and to make specific recommendations on how Los Angeles can improve the comfort and safety of its bicycle route network."

Teams of L.A. designers and community stakeholders - local planners, engineers, transportation experts, community representatives and advocates - will collaborate with the foreign experts on project proposals featuring "innovate design ideas" to meet L.A.'s needs as a growing bicycle-friendly city.

ThinkBike registration for both the opening and closing sessions is open. The opening session takes place on Thursday, September 22, from 9am to 10:30am at the Los Angeles Department of Transportation main conference room / CalTrans building. The closing session is scheduled for Friday, September 23, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Los Angeles Police Department Deaton Hall Auditorium.

Let's see what a little European influence can do for the City of Angels.

When I saw the picture, I giggled with the memories - I visited Arnhem 2 years back in the dead of the worst winter northern Europe had had in about 40 years, and saw all those bikes parked by the train station ohsovery neatly -- except they were under a couple feet of snow and ice, so I doubt any of them would be used until spring!  Thanks for the memories....  0:3
