The mother who allegedly killed her baby boy by tossing him from the roof of a four-story parking structure at the Orange County Children's Hospital is being held in a solitary cell in the psychiatric ward of the Orange County jail. Sheriff's officials, according to L.A. Now, said she is dressed in a protective gown to prevent her from injuring herself.

Sonia Hermosillo, the 31-year-old mother, supposedly could not handle her son's disability. Born with congenital muscular torticollis - a twisting of the neck to one side - the infant wore a helmet to correct his plagiocephaly, also known as flat-head syndrome. Hermosillo allegedly removed the helmet before the incident.

She is slated to be arraigned on Thursday morning for murder and has also been placed on immigration hold.

Noe Medina, husband to Hermosillo and father of the late Noe Jr., defends his wife's action, noting her history of mental illness that includes postpartum depression.

"She didn't do it on purpose. She didn't know what she was doing," Medina said, with tears in his eyes. He spoke through an interpreter during a news conference Wednesday on the grounds of UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where his son died after lingering for several hours in extremely critical condition.

The La Habra couple also have two young daughters.
