Jet Bridge Collapse at LAX Injures Captain and Passenger
Flying American Airlines via LAX? Watch your step. Officials are currently investigating a jet bridge collapse that occurred on Wednesday evening around 6:50pm, injuring both the captain and a passenger of Flight 557.
"They were stepping on the platform closest to the jet bridge," airline spokesman Rhonda Rathje told The LA Times.
As the jet bridge collapsed, both victims "fell at least 10 feet to the tarmac and complained of pain to their ankles, backs and necks," said officials.
"We're looking into everything right now," said Rathje, "and should know more in a couple days."
The captain and passenger were taken to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Marina del Rey and listed in fair condition. The passenger was expected to be released on Wednesday night.
American Airlines said it planned to immediately inspect all its jet bridges -- the motorized, flexible passenger ramps that connect terminal gates to parked aircraft -- at LAX.
Damage to the aircraft, which was towed to a hangar, will be inspected by The Federal Aviation Administration.
