A cyclist was killed last night, after being hit at an intersection near Compton by what witnesses describe as a black BMW , CBS LA reports.

The cyclist Enrique Lemus-Bautista, 50, was riding his bike northbound on Avalon Boulevard, when he was hit by the BMW heading west on Redondo Beach Boulevard just after 9 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses say the car did not stop, but it is not clear to them whether the cyclist or the driver had the green light. Lemus-Bautista was thrown from his bike and died at the scene.

  • I think the CHP has its priorities screwed up on this one if they are more concerned over which vehicle ran the red light than the fact the BMW driver left the scene of the wreck, hit-and-run is a felony. Catch the bastard, that's why we pay you.

  • The punishment for a fatal Hit and Run on a cyclist should be 1 to 1 for the driver... Death penalty. Instead they'll prolly only get probation and some community service hours. Terrible.

  • This is why bicyclists should be able to share the sidewalk with pedistrans, the ratio of bike to car or truck just isn't fair.

Sharing the sidewalk is actually a substantially greater risk for cyclists, who must leave the sidewalk in order to cross streets. This makes cyclists much less visible to motorists than riding in the roadway. In addition, there is risk of serious injury to both cyclists and pedestrians when bikes are on the sidewalk, which, though much less likely to result in death, are nonetheless entirely avoidable if cyclists are not on the sidewalk to begin with.
