Sunset Junction: It's Not Over Yet

Yesterday, L.A.'s Board of Public Works voted to deny a permit for Sunset Junction. The decision was made based on the fact that the organizers hadn't coughed up $142,000 to pay for this year's city services, including police and transportation.

But organizers for the festival, which is scheduled to take place this weekend, aren't giving up just yet. The board agreed to revisit the issue tomorrow, and in a statement released today by Rogers and Cowan, the PR firm representing the event, it was clear that the fight is on to keep Sunset Junction 2011 alive.

"We are working to raise the 2011 fees prior to the Board of Public Works hearing on Wednesday, August 24 at 9:30am," they said. "Our intention is to show the City that Sunset Junction is a committed and reliable partner, who continues to contribute to the Silverlake community year-round, along with being one of the most anticipated and historic fairs in Los Angeles for 31 years."

It's still an ambitious amount of money to try to scrounge up in a 48-hour period, but maybe organizers have an ace up their sleeve. The statement goes on to assert confidence that the show will go on.

"We've received a very positive response from our sponsors and supporters," they said, "and we are optimistic that we will reach our goal of obtaining the $142,000 necessary to pay the city."
