Downtown L.A. residents are an inspiring bunch. According to an infographic released today as part of 2011's DTLA Demographic Study, the 'hood boasts young, smart, professional, pet-loving dames and dudes. And the ratio of men to women is almost equal: 54% of residents are female; 46% are male.

Of the 45,518 downtown residents, an impressive 83% are employed with a median income of $86.3k. The study shows that of that 83%, 57% work in downtown and 52% have successfully clawed their way to top, senior or professional staff levels. These achievements prove that education is key, as 80% of residents completed four years of college or higher.

Downtown residents, with a median age of 33-years-old, appear relatively inactive when compared to the massive amounts of event offerings around them. The average resident attends sporting events twice each year, music, theater or dance events 3.5 times per year and art museums/galleries 3.8 times per year. Dare we assume dwellers are too engrossed in work to play?

We won't hold that against you, downtowners, since almost half of you - 43% - own pets.

Additionally, 28% of residents own their abodes.

On a side note, we are now accepting lunch date invites from downtown residents - male or female - after discovering that the per-person median spent on lunch in downtown is $15.56. Not too shabby. However, dinner dates have been deferred. The average amount spent per diner is $28.28, and we often indulge.

So we're being given stats on age, gender, and SES -- what about race? Let's be equally critical about which populations are being priced out of downtown.

when i was looking for someone to take up the lease on my  DTLA apt, the  majority of the prospective tenants were female, and none of them where FIDM students.

For what it's worth, this comes from the Downtown BID (Business Improvement District), whose purple shirt security force have waged a fairly aggressive (and sometimes brutal) campaign against the homeless population. You can bet your ass this figure does not take into account any of the 15,000+ Skid Row residents. Coming from BID, it's likely just short of propaganda, too. (I say this as a downtown resident and someone who has worked with the Skid Row population on and off as part of my job for about a decade.)

  • Downtown has come a long ways in the last decade or two.

  • $90,000 incomes? Really?

  • Interesting the demographics of gender, with clear female majorities across the board, especially in employees and visitors (if you click through to other graphs). I believe the L.A. region as a whole is a slight male majority. I'd be curious what the underlying reasons are for such a gender preference to DTLA. I thought at first it might have to do mostly with the type of work being offered in the area, and gender differences in employment, but that wouldn't explain the strong female majority in visitors as well.
